The washhouses
vague

A bit of history...
The first washhouses were the result of the 19th century general awakening to the importance of public health and hygiene.
On top of this utilitarian aspect, they soon became popular meeting places on washing days, and as such witnessed of the social life of their time.
With their two successive basins (one for washing and the other one for rinsing), the two washhouses in La Roche Canillac each have 5 niches carved out of the back wall and are each covered with a slate roof. These niches were used for putting the washing baskets. These washhouses date from the beginning of the 20th century (the one at La Roche Basse is from 1910).
